HARRISBURG May 20, 2023 – Greater Harrisburg Chorus claimed first-place honors in the 2023 Region 19 Sweet Adelines Competition held recently in Lancaster, PA. The group brought home gold medals for the overall chorus championship and the Division AA midsize title, besting a field of 19 competitors from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.

Pitted against championship choruses from around the globe, Greater Harrisburg Chorus won the lone gold medal in the barbershop music category, and was named Champion of the World Choir Games Barbershop Division.

The seventh World Choir Games was held in North America for the

first time. Choral groups from 62 countries gathered in Cincinnati to

compete for the title of World Champion in 23 musical categories.

This year's event is the first time the Barbershop art form of music

was included along with categories such as Musica Sacra and

Chamber Choir to Jazz, Scenic Folklore, and Gospel.

The Greater Harrisburg Chorus of Sweet Adelines International

competed against choruses from the Barbershop Harmony Society,

Harmony Inc., Sweet Adelines International, and other barbershop groups.

The chorus also sang at Cincinnati's Fountain Square, at the Duke Energy Center, and at the Champions Concert at Springer Hall. The greatest thrill may have been watching the American flag being raised and singing the national anthem when the results were announced at Friday's award ceremony.

With the Championship title, the Greater Harrisburg Chorus has already earned the right to compete and defend their world title at the next World Choir Games to be held in Riga, Latvia in 2014.

The chorus invites women looking for an opportunity to sing and have fun to visit a rehearsal held Tuesday evenings.
